British Values

"They’re the core of what it is to live in Britain”

At Stanton Road Primary School we uphold, promote, teach and reinforce the following fundamental British Values:

Democracy
Rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect and Tolerance of others

These values are embedded throughout all aspects of our school values, learning behaviours and our broad and balanced curriculum, which includes opportunities to explore the values. They are actively promoted through class and whole school assemblies and are taught explicitly through Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Religious Education (RE) lessons.

Democracy

Democracy is an important value at our school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.  Pupils have the opportunity to air their thoughts and ideas through our Pupil Panels and through regular pupil surveys. House Captains and Pupil Parliament representatives are appointed through a pupil voting system, reflecting our current British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action. Our school behaviour policy which involves rewards and sanctions runs through all aspects of school life and is shared with parents and carers.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws and rules, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the school day. Children are taught the value and reason behind the rules and laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, the need for consistency and the consequences when laws are broken. Our school's behaviour system and the award and reward systems we adopt ensure that every child is able to learn in a safe and secure environment.  All children follow the school ‘Learning Habits’ which are reinforced regularly throughout the day. To encourage and promote good behaviour, attitudes and work we have a whole school reward system. Exceptional work or behaviour will be rewarded with a Headteacher’s Award. We are also committed to praising children’s efforts through verbal praise.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they can do so in a safe and supportive environment. We educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering curriculum.  Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely through PSHE lessons and through specific themed weeks e.g. E-Safety Week, Anti-bullying Week, Mental Health Week etc.  Our pupils are given the freedom to make choices e.g. signing up for and suggesting extra-curricular clubs.

Mutual Respect

Mutual Respect is at the heart of our school values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and the rights of others.

  • learning how their behaviour impacts others and their own future selves

  • learning about identity, protected characteristics, prejudice and discrimination

  • learning about ways to seek help and support

  • building trusting relationships with staff

  • learning from the professionalism and conduct of staff

All members of staff are expected to actively promote and model the Stanton Road Learning Habits.

Our fully inclusive, respectful values ensure tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. We enhance our pupils' understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society through assemblies, collective acts of worship, RE and PSHE lessons and discussions involving prejudices. Through our broad and balanced curriculum, children get the opportunity to study different world faiths, beliefs, traditions and customs in depth. Members of faith groups are invited into school to share their religion and pupils of a faith are encouraged to share their experiences.
